Built and Designed to last: How Jandel Homes’ modern approach has created timeless plans.

Design Ideas | February 27th, 2022

Jandel Homes has been designing and building modular homes for over 45 years. If one thing is for certain, we’ve seen a trend or two across the decades! Some of the inspiration for our homes has been pulled from the mid-century modern design movement because we believe in building homes that last – both structurally and aesthetically.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through designing a mid-century modern modular home and how you can keep it up to date as the years go by.

What is mid-century modern?

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what this design is as it more so reflects a period in time. Specifically, the furniture, decor and architecture designed after World War II. It was a time when functionality was absolutely critical in the home and it was common to see function over form, uncluttered sleek lines, open concept design and simplicity.

You can look to the mid-century modern design movement for inspiration when creating plans for your future homes. Because let’s face it, intentional living is on the rise, and now is the time to design thoughtfully and sustainably.

Thoughtfully designed with the future in mind

Our open-concept floor plans suggest a mid-century modern feel while incorporating up-to-date elements like color palettes and functional features for how we live today. When the foundational elements of your home are modern, you can have confidence knowing your design will stand the test of time, while having the freedom to jazz up your decor every few years. For example, it’s easier to change wall decor and the colors of rugs, throw pillows and accents than to replace your flooring, cabinets and wall colors.

The anatomy of a mid-century modern modular home

When we look at the anatomy of a home, we’re considering the layout, the primary features, and functionality on top of aesthetic finishes. Having a visual breakdown of different rooms will give you inspiration when dreaming up your own home! Check out these rooms to see how finishes and functionality have been blended together for the best experience at home. (Psst…you’d be surprised to learn that the cost to build a mid-century modern home isn’t as much as you’d think!)

Main living space

Here is our Westview show home. It’s clear that this plan checks all the boxes of mid-century modern design: clean lines that are easy to follow, an open concept, timeless color palette, and a pop of contrast with black lighting and cabinet hardware.

The Master Retreat

In the Pinnacle master bedroom, simplicity is everything. The large open space serves as a blank canvas to decorate with almost any color or decor. Again, those foundational elements are tied in with contrasting black hardware!

Additional windows brighten up the space and inspire creativity.

The modern “work from home’’ movement

Working from home is the new norm in 2022. The Tuscany is a great example of how you can incorporate a functional workspace that includes all the mid-century modern elements you crave.

A bold pop of contrast like these black cabinets beautifully ties the home together while giving you room to personalise this space to your own tastes. Incorporate more greenery with plants, colorful desk organizers or keep things simple – the sky is the limit!

Flexible room options to make the most out of your home

Gone are the days of the spare bedroom being an actual bedroom. It’s a spare room that can be used in a way that’s functional for your lifestyle.

The Sicily is showing design inspiration for a yoga studio or meditation room if you don’t need another bed in your house. This is a space where you can shut the door and have quiet time! You can also use this room for something like a craft studio, separate media room or kids playroom.

2022 Color and design trends to add to your home

Good Housekeeping released the top 15 interior design trends to keep an eye on in 2022 and we couldn’t agree more! A few of their predictions have already been incorporated into our modern lineup of homes this year. Here’s what Bria Hammel Interiors had to say:

“In 2022, we are seeing traditional details making a big comeback. With so much change around the world over the past few years, it’s no surprise that more and more people are craving a sense of comfort, timelessness or even a bit of nostalgia in their homes. From pattern mixing, skirted or flanged furniture, and the incorporation of antique pieces, this new year is all about honoring our roots. And we couldn’t be happier about it!” (Good Housekeeping, 2022)

If you’re looking for a way to incorporate a pop of trendy color, look no further than Pantone. Their color of the year is “Very Peri” and would look stunning in florals, wall decor or linen accents.

Mid-century modern design is a great option for maintaining longevity in your home. Having the option to create any space you want from a good foundation will not only save you stress in the future, but it will save you time and money.
